LISBON, November 23 (RIA Novosti) - "We would like to built relations of a new quality with your great country in the bilateral and EU formats," Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio said after the talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

According to him, the talks focused, in particular, on relations between Russia and the European Union in the light of the forthcoming Russia-EU summit in The Hague, the fight against international terrorism, the situations in Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan and prospects of Mideastern peaceful settlement.

"Portugal regards Russia as its strategic partner to provide stability in Europe and Asia. Russia's domestic stability is highly important for this," Mr. Sampaio stressed.

The two leaders discussed economic cooperation and claimed the necessity to boost the activities of the intergovernmental commission.

"We have come to a conclusion that it is necessary to boost the work of the intergovernmental trade and economic commission and to seek additional reserves [of development] within this structure," Vladimir Putin said.

Jorge Sampaio highly assessed Russia's ratification of the Kyoto protocol.

"We had a detailed discussion of the developments in Iraq and the Middle East. Russia and Portugal share common positions on this issue," Vladimir Putin said following the talks.
