ISS GOT DANGEROUSLY CLOSE TO DIFFERENT OBJECTS 34 TIMES IN 2004

MOSCOW, November 22 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Space Troops have issued 34 warnings about dangerous cases of different objects getting close to the International Space Station (ISS). All of them were received by the Mission Control Center.

Space Troops Commander Vladimir Popovkin said this while summing up 2004 at an extended session of the Military Council in the headquarters of the Space Troops.

The commander said for this period the missile attack warning systems and missile defense means detected 10 training and combat launches of domestic and three test launches of foreign ballistic missiles, thee launches of domestic and one foreign missile of space purpose.

The space control system started to accompany 47 spacecraft. As of November 2004, the number of space objects in the Main Catalogue of the space control system is over 9,000.

"Shifts on duty of the Titov Main Test Center and the combat crews of space centers implemented the set tasks in required volume and with good quality in 2004," emphasized Lt.-Gen. Vladimir Popovkin.

To replenish the domestic orbital group, launches of 11 spacecraft were made during a year. As part of flight tests, the first launch of the new Soyuz-2 carrier rocket from the Plesetsk space center has been successful. Besides, in line with the Program of state flight tests, 7 test flights of intercontinental ballistic missiles have been conducted. Before the year end, it is planned to launch Glonass satellites from the Baikonur space center and launch intercontinental ballistic missiles.

As part of federal space programs, international cooperation programs and commercial programs, the Space Troops combat crews ensured 14 launches of space purpose missiles with 21 orbiting cases.
