UN POTENTIAL INEXHAUSTIBLE: RUSSIA'S FOREIGN MINISTER

MOSCOW, November 22 (RIA Novosti) - The United Nations' potential is hard to exhaust, Sergei Lavrov, Russia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, says in a contribution to the Brazilian-based daily, Correio Braziliense. It also appeared on the Foreign Ministry website today.

Many have alleged within preceding years that the United Nations is playing a smaller role than before. There are doubts of that all-purpose global organisation coping with its duties to guarantee world stability and security. That is all wrong-the UN has an inexhaustible potential, says the minister.

"I am a diplomat who represented Russia in the United Nations for many years, and I have first-hand knowledge of what the UN can do. I say in full responsibility that the UN and its pivotal agencies remain central mechanisms to settle international issues arising, and to maintain security and stability worldwide."

The United Nations was established close on sixty years ago, and it has been known ever since for openness, flexibility, and a gift of quick adaptation to changing situations. In that, the UN closely adheres to international legal norms.

Many picture UN reforms as an attempt to overcome a crisis. As things really are, the reforms come as a natural developmental stage as the Organisation is evolving, pointed out Sergei Lavrov.

Russia wants the UN Security Council to enlarge in such a way as would earn the member states' utmost support, and would not make the Council less efficient, even for a short while. That is why Russia is consistently working for the present-day Security Council permanent members to fully retain their status, which primarily concerns the veto right, says the Foreign Minister.
