MOSCOW, Nov 21 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Vladimir Putin called not to replace the criminal aspect of the problem with the political aspect, while answering the journalists' question on the reasons behind Mikhail Khodorkovsky's arrest.

In an interview with Brazilian newspapers Folha de Sao Paulo and Globo, the head of the Russian state emphasized that Mr. Khodorkovsky had never been involved in politics.

"He has never been a State Duma deputy, i.e., an MP, nor has he been a member of any party or headed any political movement," said Mr. Putin.

"At the same time, in our country, as well as in many other democratic countries, a person is considered innocent until the court's verdict enters into force. This is fully applied to Mr. Khodorkovsky. For me he is an innocent person, I repeat, until trial is over and a decision is made," said the Russian president.

Mr. Putin stressed that economic crimes were rather complicated and they were to be investigated in line with the law.

"One thing is evident - everyone must observe the law, all, regardless of their post or income, of their state influence. All must be equal before the law, all must observe it, pay taxes and, consequently, be brought to account in case of violation of this legislation," emphasized the Russian president.
