BRAZIL TO PROMOTE CONTACTS WITH RUSSIAN FEDERATION

RIO DE JANEIRO, November 19 (RIA Novosti's Andrei Kurguzov) - Brazil supports the Russian initiative on the struggle against international terrorism, Brazilian Foreign Minister Selsu Amorim told RIA Novosti in an interview.

"Brazil supports the draft resolution on the struggle against terrorism submitted by Russia to the United Nations Security Council and adopted in October", the Brazilian minister said. "Earlier, too, Brazil supported different initiatives aimed at containing all manifestations of terrorism".

He also said that, in the sphere of drug traffic, "experts of Rio Group and Russia have regular meetings on these questions".

Among other things, Selsu Amorim noted that Brazil is ready for cooperation with Russia in fighting arms and human contraband.

Brazil is ready to develop trade and economic relations with Russia, the Brazilian foreign minister said in the RIA Novosti interview.

Trade turnover between the two countries is on the rise, exceeding two million dollars' worth last year, he said. "However, trade is as before focused on a narrow rage of goods", he said.

The minister noted that the government of Brazil treats with understanding the obtaining imbalance in bilateral trade and is ready to take the steps required to broader Russia's share in the Brazilian import. "At a time when the Brazilian export to Russia increased by 7.9 percent in the period from January to October 2004, the import of Russian products grew by almost 57 percent, including the purchase of goods with enhanced added tax, such as turbines", the Brazilian minister said.

Brazil and Russia are mutually interested in the development of cultural and art contacts, Selsu Amorim said in the RIA Novosti interview.

"Brazil is tremendously interested in Russian culture, history, literature, dance, painting, music, cinema", the Brazilian foreign minister said. "On the other hand, I know that Brazilian television serials are very popular inRussia".

Selsu Amorim also noted that Brazilian music, known world-wide, is not so popular in Russia.

Among the important cultural events are the opening in Brazil in 2001 of the exhibition 500 Years of Russian Art, as well as the opening in December 2002 of Russia's first Brazilian library at the Lomonosov State University in Moscow.

The Brazilian minister made special note of work of the Bolshoi ballet school in Joinvile, Santa Catarina. It is Bolshoi's only school beyond Russia.

Selsu Amorim said that it is planned to sign very soon an agreement on a new programme of cultural cooperation in 2005-2007.

"The new programme provides for a whole gamut of cultural events in the field of music, scenic art, circus, decorative and applied art, cinema", the Brazilian foreign minister said.
