MOSCOW, November 15 (RIA Novosti) - Russia has a vast potential for opening new mineral deposits, Gennadi Kalabin, director of the Academician Vernadsky State Geological Museum, said on Monday after signing the founding papers of the Russian-French Metallogenic Laboratory.

"Its establishment is crucial for Russia with its vast reserves of minerals. In our country, the possibility of discovering new deposits is higher than in other regions", Kalabin said.

He explained that metallogeny is a branch of geology engaged in the search for indications of mineral deposits with their subsequent survey.

"Prices on metals are falling on the world market because the larger the field, the more the economic expediency of its development", Kalabin said.

In Russia geological survey is now linked mostly to seismology, while in France geoinformation systems are greatly developed, he said.

"A combination of the two will open up new prospects for prognosticating the discovery of new fields", Kalabin said.

In turn, Christian Foillac, research director of the French Geological Service, assured that such cooperation paves the ground for new projects.

"The metallogenic laboratory handles problems crucial for sustained economic growth and interaction between the two countries", he said.
