MOSCOW, November 14 (RIA Novosti) Whatever the political odds, relationship between Russia and Ukraine is a value in itself, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told NTV television network in response to the question whether Russian President Vladimir Putin's visits to Ukraine are linked to the ongoing election campaign in the country.

"Whatever the political odds, relationship between Russia and Ukraine is a value in itself historically as well as economically," Lavrov said.

He said that the meetings of the presidents of the two countries had proved that point.

"The Presidents do not just meet and go electioneering; they sign agreements," he pointed out.

He said that everything done recently between Russia and Ukraine (lifting some visa and residential registration restrictions) "is important for people at any moment."

When asked about Moscow's attitude toward the returns of the election and referendum in Belarus, Lavrov underscored the outcomes were "the choice of the Belarussian people."

"To threaten or to impose sanctions on Belarus as well as on any other country is counterproductive," the Russian minister said.
