MOSCOW, Nov 9 (RIA Novosti) - The Federal Service on Veterinary and Phytosanitary Control under the Russian Agriculture Ministry imposed a ban on importation of animals from Peru in connection with the threat of the foot-and-mouth disease, reads a ministry press release received by RIA Novosti Tuesday.

"In connection with the unstable epizootic situation in Peru in regard to the foot-and-mouth disease, and a real threat to bring the virus to the Russian territory, from November 9, 2004, temporary restrictions are imposed on importation from that country of live animals, all kinds of products of animal origin and foods for animals except for fish and seafood from provinces where the situation is safe," reads the press release.

The ban is also connected with "repeated violations of veterinary requirements when the Peruvian side exported to the Russian Federation cargoes supervised by the State Veterinary Control."

Temporary restrictions on importation to Russia of animals, milk and meat from two Spanish regions were imposed as well, reads the press release.

"From November 5, 2004, temporary restrictions are imposed on the importation to the Russian Federation from the territory of Andalusia and Extremadura of live ruminants and herbivores susceptible to blue tongue, as well as sperm, ovules, raw materials and ready products from these animals," reads the statement.

This measure has been adopted "in connection with the appearance and spreading in these regions of the blue tongue disease."

Blue tongue is a catarrhal fever that mostly strikes sheep.
