MOSCOW AND ROME CONFIRM THEIR COMMITMENTS TO PROMOTE MID-EAST PEACE

MOSCOW, November 3 (RIA Novosti) - "Russia and Italy believe that the settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is possible on the basis of the Roadmap developed by the Quartet of international mediators in keeping with the resolution 1515 of the United Nations Security Council", reads the joint statement of Vladimir Putin and Silvio Berlusconi, adopted on results of their talks in the Kremlin.

Moscow and Rome confirm their obligations to promote the establishment of an equal, fair and comprehensive peace, which would put an end to the conflict in the Middle East on the basis of international law.

"The Russian Federation and the Italian Republic will participate in the international meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh on Iraq and support the creation of mechanism for attaining the agreements reached at the meeting", the document reads.

"Expressing concern over the preserving complicated situation in the field of security in Iraq, Russia and Italy come out for the earliest normalisation on the basis of abidance by the resolution 1546 of the UN Security Council, the schedule of the political process sealed in the resolution, especially as regards the upcoming elections", the statement notes.

"In this context, the sides support the initiative for convening an international conference on Iraq, called upon to step up efforts of the international community for assistance to the people of Iraq", the document goes on to read.

The Russian Foreign Ministry will participate in the Iraq conference, due on November 23. Sergei Lavrov said this earlier, answering a question from RIA Novosti.

The Russian side will direct its efforts to work on the future elections in Iraq. "It is important that the elections be independent", Mr Lavrov emphasized.

Russia and Italy confirm their readiness to promote the development of partnership within the format of the Russia-NATO Council, the Russian and Italian leaders say in the joint statement.

"The sides emphasize the importance of expanding political dialogue, strengthening of cooperation in the struggle against international terrorism, opposing the spread of weapons of mass destruction, keeping peace and settling crises, controlling arms and strengthening the confidence measures, emergency civil responding, monitoring air space", the document reads.

Moscow and Rome confirm their desire to strengthen strategic partnership between Russia and the European Union by full-scale realisation of the four common environments.

"In keeping with the agreements reached in course of the St.Petersburg (2003), Rome (2003) and Moscow (2004) summits Russia-EU, the Russian Federation and the Italian Republic confirm their desire to strengthen strategic partnership by means of full-scale realisation of the four common environments", reads the joint statement of Vladimir Putin and Silvio Berlusconi.

"Attaching special importance to the strengthening of relations between Russia and the European Union, the sides underline the importance of fulfilling the obligations fixed in the Joint Declaration on the Expansion of the European Union and Relations Between the EU and Russia, dated April 27, 2004, especially as regards the joint efforts for facilitating and carrying out in full volume passenger and cargo transit to and from the Kaliningrad region and the protection of rights of the Russian-speaking minority on the basis of the principles recognised in the EU, OSCE and the Council of Europe", the document notes.
