MURMANSK CELEBRATES 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEFEAT OF GERMAN TROOPS IN THE TRANSPOLAR REGION

MURMANSK, October 31 (RIA Novosti's Ekaterina Kozlova) - Murmansk residents celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the defeat of German troops in the Transpolar region during the Great Patriotic War.

According to the city's authorities, the famous A.V. Alexandrov Academic Ensemble of folk singing and dancing of the Russian Army will perform on Sunday at the main sports arena - Ice Palace of Sports. It will be the last accord of the festivities.

The A.V. Alexandrov Academic Ensemble of folk singing and dancing of the Russian Army was formed in 1928. During the Great Patriotic War it gave about 1,500 performances at the front line.

Veterans of the Great Patriotic War will constitute the major part of the audience during this unique concert.

In October 1944, the troops of the Karelia front supported by the Northern Fleet, in difficult conditions and facing stiff resistance, breached enemy line of defenses and entered the main stage of the Petsamo-Kirkenes operation.

As a result of a series of bloody battles, the Soviet troops liberated Liinahamari and Petsamo by mid-October and approached the Soviet border on October 18.

The Soviet Army crossed the border with Norway in accordance with an agreement between the governments of the allied countries and Norway. On October 25, 1944 the Soviet troops liberated the port Kirkenes and on October 27 - towns of Neiden and Nautsi. By November 1, 1944 they approached the western borders of Norway.
