TERRORIST ACT PREVENTED IN CHECHNYA

GROZNY, October 30 (RIA Novosti) - A major terrorist act has been prevented in the Chechen capital, reports the regional command center for supervising the North Caucasian counter-terrorist operation.

Law enforcement officers found a readymade landmine in Grozny's Leninsky district the other day. That landmine, which comprised a plastic canister filled with nine kilograms of hexogen and a remote-controlled detonator, was firmly imbedded in the ground, RIA Novosti's interlocutor said.

In his words, that homemade explosive device was also filled with metal fragments, which could have caused greater damage. A federal combat engineer unit defused the bomb.

Two terrorist bases were destroyed in the republic's Kurchaloi district and near Muzhichi, Ingushetia, the command center's spokesman added.

A federal unit found a base of unlawful paramilitary units near Koren-Benoi, Kurchaloi district, while checking the testimony of an arrested militant, the command-center spokesman added.

In his words, that bases consisted of three dugouts, with each dugout having one iron stove, as well as 15 cots, RIA Novosti's interlocutor said.

Concealed observation posts were found near the dugouts, he added.

The soldiers inspected the dugouts, finding an AK-74 assault rifle replete with a tubular grenade launcher, more than 200 bullets, numerous bandages and medications, winter clothing and footwear, as well as 30 kg of food, the command center's spokesman stressed.

That base was blown up, with soldiers submitting all weapons and ammunition for an expert check, he noted.

In his words, the Ingush base, which was located the other day, featured two dugouts, which could accommodate 10 bandits at a time.

Four rocket-launcher rounds, more than 300 5.45-mm bullets, eight sleeping bags, eight combat backpacks, two four-person tents, civilian men's and women's clothes, as well as 15 kg of foodstuffs, were confiscated, RIA Novosti's interlocutorsaid.

That base was also blown up. Right now, investigators are doing their best to locate and arrest those militants, who had built the base, the command center's spokesman noted in conclusion.
