MOSCOW, October 23 (RIA Novosti) - The members of the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, who were sent to monitor the parliamentary elections and referendum in Belarus believe these events were "transparent, free, democratic and legitimate."

The State Duma issued a statement on Friday summing up the results of the monitoring of the preparations for and the course of the elections in Belarus.

The Duma said no major violations had been registered at the candidate registration phase.

The MPs said "appropriate conditions for the equal and free declaration of will of the Belarussian nationals" had been ensured.

However, the Duma was alarmed by its observers' reports that the elections and the referendum in Belarus were going on under unprecedented pressure from other countries.

"The extremely negative statements with respect to Belarus' referendum pronounced by officials and politicians in some European countries and the United States and their threats to take discriminatory measures can be qualified as nothing but an attempt to interfere in the sovereign country's internal affairs and the violation of international law standards," reads the statement.

The State Duma believes the obviously anti-Belarussian position of some of the media outlets that covered the elections and referendum in the republic was not conducive to establishing the sustainable Union of Belarus and Russia.

The State Duma emphasised that it respected the choice the Belarussian nationals made via the referendum and parliamentary elections.
