EU PARLIAMENTARIANS KNOW LITTLE ABOUT CAUCASIAN SETUP - RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY

MOSCOW, October 21 (RIA Novosti) - European parliamentarians lack knowledge of the true state of affairs in Georgia, South Ossetia and Abkhazia, says the commentary of the Press and Information Board of the Russian Foreign Ministry regarding the EU Georgian resolution.

"Its clauses reflect concern in the European Union circles on the preservation of tension in Georgia's flash points - Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Alas, lack of knowledge by the European parliamentarians the true state of affairs in these regions is noticeable", the ministerial commentary notes.

"The 'regret' voiced in the resolution over certain hypothetical actions of Russia in the North Caucasus appears strange. It is a clear attempt, hopefully unintentional, to mix heterogeneous things - fight against terrorism and other manifestations of extremism, on one hand, and the steps towards stabilisation and the search for a political solution for regional problems, on the other", the Russian Foreign Ministry notes.

"As is known, Russia stands for a political settlement of intra-Georgian conflicts, resulting from the violation of the rights of peoples residing here to ethnic identity and autonomy inside the sovereign Georgian state. It is Russian peacekeepers who are the force preventing the resumption of hostilities in Abkhazia and North Ossetia", the ministerial communique reads.
