TERRORISTS ATTACK AFGHANISTAN AGAIN IN CONTEMPT OF MOSLEM RAMADAN

KABUL, October 17 (RIA Novosti) - Head of Afghanistan Interim Government Hamid Karzai condemned a terrorist attack in the Eastern province of Kunar, in which three teenagers and a policeman were killed.

The statement distributed on Sunday underscores that the attack was perpetrated in the early days of Ramadan (began October 15), during which all Moslems are subject to food and entertainment restrictions, and violence is prohibited.

"This act cannot be called anything but barbarian. Nothing could possibly justify the action of these people, who are not champions but enemies of Islam," Mr. Karzai said.

According to the local press, the Taliban are behind the attack. The Kunar governor reports that first a group of militants stopped a truck that supplied food to the Kunar-deployed U.S. military base and set the vehicle on fire. As locals rushed to the scene, the militants blew up a powerful remote-controlled bomb.

Independent newspapers report that the Taliban whose spokespeople pledged to disrupt the elections have stepped up their action lately. Mr. Karzai is the front runner in the election with over 70% of the cast vote, while runner number two, Tajik Unus Kanuni, appears to have been supported by as few as 11% of voters.

Two U.S. soldiers were killed and three wounded in a Taliban attack on an international military patrol in the province of Uruzgan where Taliban mastermind Mullah Omar had been born.

So far the Afghan Interior Ministry and Defense Ministry have failed to provide security to the capital, which they had committed themselves to, the local media claim.

Last night Kabul suffered the second rocket strike since October 9 when Afghanistan held the first post-Taliban presidential election. One man was killed and a woman wounded in the strike. Experts say the rockets had a firing range of seven to ten kilometers, which suggests they had been launched from somewhere near the city.
