6.5% RUSSIAN INDUSTRIAL OUTPUT INCREASE OVER JANUARY-SEPTEMBER

MOSCOW, October 15 (RIA Novosti) - Industrial output in Russia increased by 6.5% over the January-September period of this year, as against the respective last year's period, and in September - by 3.5%. These data were made public Friday by the Federal Statistics Service of Russia (Rosstat).

Excluding the effect of the working time fund, industrial output over these periods increased by 6% and 3%, respectively.

Over the third quarter, industrial output registered a 4.8% increase in terms of the overall production volume excluding the effect of the working time fund.

In September 2004, the overall volume of industrial production dropped by 2.5% from the August level, whereas over the third quarter it increased by 6.2%, as against the second quarter's indicator.

To compare: over September 2003, the overall volume of industrial production increased by 8%, as against the respective 2002 period.

The highest production growth over the January-September period of this year, as against the respective last year's period, was registered in the glass and faience and porcelain manufacturing sector (16.9%).

These are followed by engineering and metalworking (12.7%), the chemical and petrochemical industry (7.9%), the fuel industry (7.7%), the building materials industry (5.9%), ferrous metallurgy (5.2%), the food industry - 4.4%, non-ferrous metallurgy (3.6%), the lumber, woodworking and pulp and paper sector (3.6%), the printing industry (2.9%), and the electric power industry (0.2%).

A fall in production output was registered in four industrial sectors, i.e., flour and cereals production and the feed mill industry (2.8%), the medical industry (2.8%), the light industry (5.9%), and the microbiological industry (5.9%).

Over the period under review, electricity generation increased by 1.6%, to 672 billion kwh, while thermal power generation dropped by 1.7%, to 946 giga-calories.

Oil production grew by 9.6%, to 341 million tons; the volume of primary oil processing - by 1.7%, to 144 million tons, and gasoline production - by 2.9%, to 22.3 million tons.

Gas and coal output increased by 2.6% and 1.4%, to 465 million cubic metres and 203 million tons, respectively. Iron ore output increased by 3.2%, to 71 million tons, and ferrous rolled stock production - by 5.4%, to 40 million tons.
