MOSCOW, October 13 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Interior Ministry intends to assign non-lethal weaponry to certain police officers, Leonid Vedenov, deputy chief of the ministry Public Order Board, said to a news briefing.

Entitled to such arms will be divisional inspectors, patrols, officers on metro and airliner duty, and some others. R&D on traumatic weaponry is well underway as available makes leave much to be desired for homing precision and excessive bullet hitting power, which endangers innocent people in case of stray shots.

The ministry and certifying agencies are licensing pioneer firearms for private security companies. These arms will become available as soon as relevant bylaws are approved. The reform aims to cut current private security arsenals by half, added Mr. Vedenov.

The Interior Ministry insists on compulsory public instruction to use non-lethal weaponry, what with alarming statistics of tragedies that come of shooters' ignorance. Non-lethal pistols and revolvers shoot round rubber bullets, which retain striking power within a ten metre range. Even despite that, clumsy and careless shooters have caused many deaths.

The ministry will quite soon make an official application for legislative amendments concerning public possession of non-lethal weapons. As Mr. Vedenov sees the matter, it must take training classes, complete with examinations, to obtain a non-lethal pistol license.
