RUSSIAN TO HOST INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF MARINE CADETS FOR FIRST TIME

VELIKY NOVGOROD, October 9 (RIA Novosti's Andrei Letyagin) - An international congress of marine cadets will be held in Veliky Novgorod in July-August 2005.

A relevant decision was made at the recent conference of the International Association of Marine Cadets in Victoria (Canada), chairman of the Novgorod Marine Assembly Gennady Shapin said on Saturday.

Delegations of marine cadets from the United Kingdom, Canada, the Netherlands, the United States, Xianggang (Hong Kong), Japan and other countries are expected to gather in Veliky Novgorod.

Cadets aged between 14 and 17 will sail the Volkhov River and Ilmen, Ladoga and Onega Lakes on board the training ships Mister Veliky Novgorod and Mikhail Balaban.

According to Gennady Shapin, such congresses of marine cadets are annually held in member-countries of the International Association of Marine Cadets. Russia will host this event for the first time.

The international congress of marine cadets is organized by the Novgorod Marine Assembly, the local club of young sailors and the City Hall.

At the moment Veliky Novgorod boasts the largest club of young sailors in Russia. It has several training vessels. About 400 young club members conducted 11 campaigns on the largest rivers and lakes in Russia's North-west in summer 2004 covering several thousands of kilometers.
