MOSCOW, October 9 (RIA Novosti) - Russia has harvested 12% more grain this year than in 2003, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov said, opening the sixth Russian agricultural exhibition `The Golden Fall` in Moscow.

"The farming sector may not have been developing at the rate we would like it to, but it has certainly registered a growth," the Prime Minister pointed out.

According to Mikhail Fradkov, the domestic poultry production, for example, has risen 17% in 2004.

"The Government has been paying serious attention to development of the agricultural sector," the Prime Minister pointed out. "About 40 million people live in Russia's rural areas, and most of them are engaged in the agricultural sector," Mr. Fradkov said, promising continued assistance to everyone working in the farming industry.

He said that he hoped the exhibition would be "interesting and effective".

On behalf of all Russian farmers, Minister of Agriculture Alexei Gordeyev thanked the Government for the planned increase of 8.5 billion rubles ($1 is 29.22 rubles) in supporting the country's agricultural sector in 2005.

Commenting on the Russian farmers' achievements of the past years, Mr. Gordeyev pointed out that the Russian dairy producers have for the first time in history gained accreditation as exporters of dairy products to the European Union.

He also noted that this year has seen a substantial expansion of the `Golden Fall` exhibition's scale. More than 2,000 companies from over 70 regions are taking part in the event. The organizers are exhibiting both food products and advanced farm machinery. For the first time in the exhibition's history, they have set up a special floor for displaying the latest achievements in the domestic livestock farming.
