UKRAINE'S PRESIDENTIAL RACE: 5% AHEAD OF YUSCHENKO GREAT SUCCESS, SAYS YANUKOVICH

MOSCOW, October 8 (RIA Novosti's Natalia Belova) - Victor Yanukovich, Ukraine's Prime Minister and presidential hopeful, would think he is doing fine if his public rating were a mere 5 per cent above that of Victor Yuschenko, his principal rival and Our Ukraine bloc leader.

"The ratings sociometric services have to offer now greatly differ from each other. Equality with Yuschenko is the worst option for me, and 5 per cent ahead the best possible," the Premier said to a congress of spokesmen of Russian-based ethnic Ukrainian public organisations, underway in Moscow.

"The two of us will appear in a runoff, if there is any," he added.

"The preceding months saw fine developments-I feel it when I go to Ukrainian provinces. I addressed the electorate on a good many occasions, and I shall go on doing so. When I meet the people-in-the-street, I see that the Ukrainian nation is putting ever more trust in me than my rival," the presidential hopeful went on.

His pre-election strategies aim to cope with government programmes, pointed out Victor Yanukovich. "I never discarded my prime-ministerial duties. I dedicate 70 per cent of my time to government routine, and a mere 30 per cent to campaigning-and I shall never change these tactics before the initial election round."

To restore public faith in the administration is his main goal, he said.

Dmitri Medvedev, chief of the Kremlin staff, had a short routine conference with Mr. Yanukovich during the congress today. They discussed certain aspects of Russian-Ukrainian relations, reports the Kremlin press service.

Ukraine is going to presidential polls, October 31.
