MOSCOW, October 8 (RIA Novosti) - The board of the heads of EURASEC (Eurasian Economic Community) customs services has elected Alexander Zherikhov, head of the Russian Federal Customs Service, as its chairman.

At their Friday session, heads of customs services noted the need to base fundamentals of EURASEC customs legislation on the principles of the Kyoto Convention that provides for consistent unification of the customs law without any damage to national interests.

The Board decided to join the Integration Committee with an initiative to form a united working group to continue drafting the fundamentals of the EURASEC customs legislation.

The participants in the session considered prevention of intellectual property smuggling across the border. The Board decided to send the relevant regulatory acts of EURASEC countries for consideration of the Russian customs service.

Moreover, the Board's session highlighted the need to step up co-operation of the customs services with the World Customs Organisation within the Convention on Simplification and Harmonisation of Customs Procedures.

The participants in the session considered the results of the joint targeted programme on technical provision of external border checkpoints and decided to draft proposals to develop the second stage of this targeted programme for the period of 2006-2010 within a month.
