DOLLAR/ROUBLE: STATUS QUO ANTE

MOSCOW, October 4 (RIA Novosti) - A few days of ups and downs are past, and today got the rouble/dollar rate back.

The MICEX unified session opened with a slight rouble rise-R29.213/$1 for today and R29.212/$1 for tomorrow. It was R29.15/$1 within a few minutes.

Dollar offers came up due to the Central Bank of Russia changing its line of conduct, say dealers. True to its regulation duties, the bank started foreign currency acquisition within a few preceding days after quotations got below R29.215/$1. Now, the Central Bank surprisingly withdrew.

Dealers had an hour or two of suspense before the Central Bank reappeared at its customary R29.215 to acquire roughly 400 million dollars-two thirds of the lump session deals for tomorrow--$605.776 million.

The market got steady back at previous positions. "Nothing happens," and no sensations will come up within the day, Sergei Kulinich Absolute Bank dealer, forecast, early afternoon.

The rate came back to R29.215/$1, 11.30, Moscow time, and made a token rise to 29.218-29.219, 12.30. Kulinich ascribes that to tactical currency demands. "We owe the demand to importers, who prefer a not very liquid market," he remarked-and forecast a more bearish afternoon.
