MOSCOW, October 4 (RIA Novosti) - Russia views adoption of the United Nations Security Council resolution prolonging the mandate of the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Kinshasa) as an important step to promote the peace process in that country, says the communique of the Press and Information Board of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Resolution 1565 intends prolonging the mandate of the UN mission in the Congo until March 31, 2005, increasing the strength of the military and police personnel by 5,900. The UN mission is obliged to maintain security in the main potential-instability regions North and South Kivu and Ituri, ensure security for civilians, the mission's personnel and humanitarian organisations.

Also, the UN mission is to provide assistance to the transitional national-unity government in holding elections, conduct of the disarmament programme, demobilisation, reintegration and repatriation of Congolese and foreign combatants.

The United Nations Security Council has called on the governments of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda to take steps towards the normalisation of relations and their territory not to be used for encroachments on the sovereignty of other states. The UN mission has been instructed to coordinate its efforts with the UN Burundi Operation for supervising transboundary movements of combatants and the illegal arms supplies to the armed groups.

"Russia views the adoption of this resolution as an important step by the United Nations in assisting the peace process in the DRC and, for its part, will take efforts required to attain these goals", the Russian Foreign Ministry stresses.
