OVER 1.500 PEOPLE KILLED IN EMERGENCIES IN SEPTEMBER IN RUSSIA

MOSCOW, October 2 (RIA Novosti) - This September the total of 1,556 people were killed and 2,330 injured in fires, marine disasters and emergencies in Russia, the Information Department of the Russian Ministry of Civil Defense, Emergencies and Natural Disasters reported to RIA Novosti.

"As compared with September 2003 the number of emergencies increased by 50%, with death toll rising by 6.4 times. There was a decline in fires by 35%, the number of victims declining by 17%," a source in the ministry was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying.

According to Emergencies Ministry's information, this September Russia suffered from 77 emergencies of natural, biological and social character, as well as man-caused ones. These took the lives of 477 and 963 people were wounded.

Last month 915 people died, 802 suffered and over 3,500 saved from 13,855 man-caused fires.

Besides, 5,139 explosive objects were neutralized in September.

Totally, officers of the Ministry of Emergencies saved 3,774 people.

19,690 road accidents happened last month killing 2,784 people and injuring 18,500. More than 4,000 people were saved.

"As compared to the last year's similar period, road accidents decreased in number by 13%, the number of those killed by 4%," a source in the ministry added.
