* The 2nd International festival of Alfred Shnitke will open in the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. It is dedicated to the 70th birth anniversary of the famous composer who died in 1998.

* The Moscow Maly Theater will tour Japan as part of the Theater Chekhov Festival timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Anton Chekhov's death. Moscow actors will show his plays "The Seagull" and "Three Sisters".
CAIRO
* The 4th conference of Arab graduates from Russian and CIS universities (October 2-4) will open in Cairo. Its purpose is to boost the role of graduates in the development of overall links between the Arab countries, Russia and the CIS. Graduates from Russian (Soviet) Universities from 12 Arab countries, including Iraq, will participate in the conference.
