HAVANA, September 28 (RIA Novosti's Arseni Oganesyan, Sergei Ryabikin) - Asked by RIA Novosti about the goal of an international conference on Iraq, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said it is help to the people of Iraq in reaching a national consensus.

"The goals of the conference, which merits being arranged, consists in above all helping the Iraqis reach a national consensus for the political forces now in the interim governing council gain interaction with the political opposition", Sergei Lavrov said.

In his opinion, "it is crucial to come to the elections with a coordinated platform reflecting the consensus in Iraqi society". It is also important for "the elections to give truly equal opportunities to all the political, cultural, religious and ethnic groups in Iraq for getting a place for themselves in the emerging structures of legislative and executive power", he believes.

"Iraq's neighbours, the Arab League, the Organisation of Islamic Conference are to prompt movement towards such a consensus. More so that it is in the interests of the countries in the region, of its stability. Without stability in Iraq this will not take place", he added.

Among the conferees can be countries guaranteeing the agreements to be reached at the conference - members of the United Nations Security Council and, possibly, countries of the European Union, Sergei Lavrov said.

"The approaches of many countries, including the interim governing council of Iraq, are evolving towards this concept of the conference", Lavrov resumed. "The fact that Egypt has proposed holding the conference in its territory proves the topicality of this initiative", he said.
