GROZNY, September 25 (RIA Novosti) -Russian special services are in search of the successor to the Arab mercenaries Khattab and Abu-al-Valid earlier killed in Chechnya, the spokesman for the Regional Headquarters in charge of the counter-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus, Ilya Shabalkin, told RIA Novosti.

"At present, the Al-Qaida functionary and Arab mercenary known as Abu-Havs is the successor to Khattab and Abu-al-Valid. He will end his days just as infamously as his predecessors did," Shabalkin said.

According to him, the Federal Security Service has confirmed that the Arab mercenary Abu-al-Valid, the notorious leader of the illegal armed units and a functionary of international terrorist organizations, was killed by federal forces in April 2004.

"The Arab mercenary Abu Al Valid Al Khamidi (a. Abu-Valid) born in 1973, a subject of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (his real name is Aziz Ben Said Ben Ali al-Ghamdi), was one of the closest aides and then the first deputy of the Arab mercenary Khattab sent to the North Caucasus by the leaders of the international terrorists and subsequently killed by the federal forces in 2002," Ilya Shabalkin said.

According to him, Abu al-Valid was in charge of such issues as setting up a network of terrorists' training bases across Chechnya and appropriation of the funds donated by foreign sponsors.

"In addition, he personally took part in preparation and supervision of terrorist attacks perpetrated in the North Caucasus and other parts of Russia. He was also in charge of establishing a vast secret terrorist network spanning nearly all southern Russia as well as some areas of central and eastern Russia," Shabalkin pointed out.

At the end of March 2002, following Khattab's death, the leaders of the international terrorist organization Moslem Brothers decided to delegate to Abu al-Valid some of the powers pertaining to funding and coordination of the militants' activities in Chechnya.
