UNUSED HIGHLY ENRICHED URANIUM GOES FROM UZBEKISTAN TO RUSSIA FOR PROCESSING

TASHKENT, September 22 (RIA Novosti) - Uzbekistan is through with transporting unused highly enriched uranium to Russia for conversion into low-enriched non-weapon-grade, RIA Novosti learnt from the Nuclear Physics Institute of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences.

Shipment of the nuclear fuel was supervised by experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency and the American Department of Energy

It was done towards realisation of the safety measures within the framework of the American-Russian programme for nuclear materials protection, control and accounting, the institute said.

Uzbekistan is the first country of the Commonwealth of Independent States to ship unused nuclear fuel to Russia.

RIA Novosti learnt from the Uzbek Foreign Ministry that, in a message to Uzbek President Islam Karimov, American Presidential National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice on behalf of President George Bush thanks the leadership of Uzbekistan for the outstanding contribution to the project of returning highly enriched uranium to the Russian Federation within the framework of the Global Threat Reduction Initiative.
