PARLIAMENTARY COMMISSION MEMBERS CAN'T DIVULGE INFORMATION WHILE LOOKING INTO BESLAN TERRORIST ACT

MOSCOW, September 20 (RIA Novosti) - Members of the parliamentary commission examining the Beslan terrorist act may not divulge information, Sergei Mironov, speaker of the Federation Council (upper chamber of Russian parliament), has said.

"All the members are not entitled to provide information on the course of examination or comments except at official press conferences sanctioned by the chairman of the commission," he told journalists.

After the examination, the parliamentary commission will prepare a special report for the Federal Assembly (parliament), citing the causes and circumstances of the Beslan tragedy.

Mironov confirmed that the senators in the commission will fly to North Ossetia on Monday.

Eleven members of the Federation Council sit on the commission. The State Duma (lower chamber of parliament) will decide on its representation on September 25.

Duma deputy chairman Alexander Torshin will be in charge, says the communique of the Federation Council press service, which has come to hand at RIA Novosti.

The parliamentary commission was established at the 133rd (extraordinary) session of the Federation Council on September 20. It will look into the causes and circumstances of the Beslan tragedy, work out recommendations to improve the Russian antiterrorist legislation, says the communique.

The commission will interpellate the federal and republican power structures, hear witnesses of the Beslan terrorist act and other participants. The Federation Council will consider the commission's conclusions. Results of the examination will be made public.

The Monday hearings in the Federation Council continued for almost three hours.

FSB Director Nikolai Patrushev, Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliev, Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov spoke before senators, a RIA Novosti correspondent reports. The hearings were held behind closed doors.
