ST. PETE FOR ENVIRONMENT WEEK

ST. PETERSBURG, September 19 (RIA Novosti's Dinah Danilova) - An Environment Week is taking start in St. Petersburg, to last into September 25, Saturday next, reports the municipal ecology committee.

Its initial event, a conference on "Information Technologies for Environment Protection" will gather tomorrow. Spokesmen of involved municipal ad hoc committees, and of offices and industrial companies will take stock of efforts to draw the city's ecological file.

The St. Petersburg branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences will host a 9th international youth biological research contest. Secondary schools will have ecology classes, art and poster competitions, and other environment-related events. The City Youth Creativity Palace arranges a gala, "Children and Ecology, 21st Century".

A Russian-German seminar will discuss abandoned industrial site reclamation, and a Russian-Dutch, prospects of partnerly environment monitoring.

Also scheduled for the week is a roundtable on, "Spirituality and Ecology".

Thursday September 23 will be an Environmental Journalism Day, top-notch British and Finnish authors offering master classes.

The week will sum up a St. Petersburg Ecocor contest, and announce its winners. Their unique prizes will come from the art studio of the Hermitage Museum School Centre-kids' drawings of rare animals living in the area.

Prominent among the events will be a 9th Green Look international ecological film festival, opening September 21. 53 films from 24 countries will be competing. All shows are free.

A grand closing show will include a parade of the city's technical-purpose sea and river vessels, and a demonstration land and water cleaning from petroleum pollution.
