BRUSSELS, September 16 (RIA Novosti's Alexander Shishlo) - The EuroParliament's United Left-Nordic Left Green Group has nominated the well-known Russian children's doctor Leonid Roshal for the 2004 Sakharov prize "for his major contribution to the protection and rescue of human lives", said the Groupe's spokeswoman Judy O'Lown.

She explained that Roshal is known not only as one who rendered aid to the inmates of the terrorist siege in Moscow's Dubrovka theatre in 2002 and was personally involved in persuading the Beslan captors to release the hostages, but also as a children's doctor who helped treat victims during conflicts in Nagorny Karabakh (the Armenian enclave in Azerbaijan), Abkhazia (a runaway republic integrated in Georgia), Chechnya, Yugoslavia and Israel and those who survived earthquakes in Sakhalin, Egypt, Japan, Afghanistan and Turkey.

The nominee list compiled by the United Left-Nordic Green Left Group includes, apart from Roshal, also American human rights activist Raquel Corry (posthumously), killed by Israeli soldiers in the Gaza Strip in March 2003, and Italy's journalist Enzo Baldoni (posthumously) who was killed in Baghdad in Agust 2003.

The United Left-Nordic Green Left Group is the EuroParliament's fifth numerically-strong faction alongside seven others which have also submitted their lists of candidates for the Sakharov prize.

It is the Europarliament's international affairs committee that is to pass its final judgement on October 1.

The Sakharov prize "For the freedom of thought", which amounts to 50,000 Euros, is awarded by the Europarliament every year. Last year it was conferred upon UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan for his personal contribution as well as the contribution of all the staff of the United Nations, to the peaceful settlement of conflicts and to commemorate those who were killed when performing their peace-keeping missions.
