MOSCOW, September 12 (RIA Novosti) - The latest terror attacks in Russia were carried out by mercenaries, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov told NTV television network. Many fight not for an ideology, but just for money, he said.

"The latest series of terrorist attacks - airplane crashes, the explosion near Moscow Rizhskaya metro station, and the terrible tragedy in Beslan - indicates that this war is becoming a system, and we are facing a powerful adversary," he said, "This does not mean that there are many of [enemy fighters] around. The point is that they are well organized, well controlled, and undoubtedly enjoy substantial financial support."

"Many militants fight not for an ideology, but just for money," he added.

"There is no forward edge in this war, we cannot see the enemy, so it is just impossible to use army methods to defeat such an enemy," the minister admitted, "[to do this] will require restructuring of all uniformed bodies - not only the Defense Ministry - but this also requires, of course, certain attitude of society because our public is not completely ready to face such threats and challenges," he said.
