MOSCOW, September 12 (RIA Novosti) - "Being in continuous contact with the Russian Embassy to Pyongyang, we are verifying reports about an explosion," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Russia's Ambassador to North Korea Andrei Karlov had previously told RIA Novosti over the telephone that North Koreans were not commenting on Western media reports about a powerful explosion in the northern part of the country.

According to Karlov, Pyongyang is living on Sunday as usually, just as one or two days before. Chairman of the Supreme People's Assembly Tsoy T'ae-bok opened an international exhibition of research literature earlier on Sunday.

Karlov added that there were no Russian citizens in the province of Yanggang where an explosion has reportedly occurred.

Reuters had reported previously that a mushroom cloud of about four kilometers in diameter was seen over the place of last Thursday's explosion in the northern part of North Korea near the border with China.

South Korean news agency Yonhap has quoted an unidentified source in Beijing as saying that the explosion was registered by a satellite last Thursday but its cause is still unclear.
