RUSSIA STRANGLES DOZEN BANKS

MOSCOW, September 9 (RIA Novosti) - Twelve banks and another credit organisation were liquidated in August, reports the Central Bank of Russia.

The country had 1,572 credit organisations-1,519 of them banks-registered for August 1, and a respective 1,559 and 1,509, September 1-a baker's dozen less.

Total active credit organisations numbered 1,318, September 1, as against 1,322, August 1. The number of banks was 1,266 and 1,369, respectively. 309 credit organisations had general licenses, and 1,175 licenses for private deposits. The number of general license holders stayed unchanged, July 1, while four left the list of private deposit license holders.

Overseas capital accounted for entire authorised assets of 33 active credit organisations, and for a half of eight. The respective number was 33 and 9, August 1.

Qualifying as credit organisation is a company registered by the Central Bank of Russia or an authorised registrar, and licensed for banking operations; a company which lost the right of banking operations; or a company registered by other agencies and holding a Central Bank license for banking operations.
