RUSSIA TO JOIN BELARUSSIAN WAR GAMES

MINSK, September 8 (RIA Novosti) - The Belarussian Armed Forces will shortly have an operation and tactical exercise, Motherland's Shield 2004. Russian units are to join in, reports Belarus' Defence Ministry press service.

The exercise will be held in Belarus, September 27 into October 3. None of its objectives is aggressive in whatever country's respect, stress ministerial PR.

The games will drill national military action not against an aggression that has already started-a goal previous exercised reached-but to prevent prospective aggression.

Appraisal of defensive efficiency and of a budding military security system is the main Shield target.

The autumn games will also appraise a newly-established territorial defence network, and emergent team efforts of the Armed Forces, the Interior Ministry, the Emergency Ministry, the KGB and frontier guards for national defence. Also to be drilled is Russian-Belarussian teamwork in international peace and security efforts.

The exercise will involve landed troops, territorial units, Air Force, AA and Interior troops, units of the Emergency Ministry and the KGB, and border guards.

A Russian motorised infantry company is to join on a bilateral programme for regional army group performance.

The games will pioneer peacekeeping action, added our informant.
