RUSSIAN AND JAPANESE NAVAL EXERCISES

TOKYO, 4 Sept - RIA Novosti's Andrei Fesyun. Joint exercises between Russian and Japanese naval units will be held on September 4 near the island of Tsushima. The ships will be training in search and rescue operations, as well as providing assistance to civil ships.

Russia will be represented by ships from the Pacific Ocean Fleet flying the flag of Rear-Admiral Sergei Avramenko.

The unit will include the Marshal Shaposhnikov, an anti-submarine ship, the BDK-11 landing craft and the R-29 missile cruiser.

The Japanese navy has told RIA Novosti that two destroyers, the Yudati and the Kurama, as well as a minesweeper, the Kamishima, will be taking part. A P-3C reconnaissance plane and three helicopters will also be involved.

The exercises will conclude a visit made by the Russian unit to the Kure naval base, which is not far from Hiroshimo.

These are the sixth joint exercises to be held this year.
