ALU ALKHANOV WINS CHECHEN ELECTIONS

GROZNY, September 1 (RIA Novosti). The chairman of the Chechen electoral commission, Abdul-Kerim Arsakhanov, told RIA Novosti on Wednesday that Alu Alkhanov had been declared the winner of the republic's presidential elections.

Mr Arsanakhov said that the early elections had been legitimate and that the results had been signed.

The electoral rolls included 593,501 people, of whom 505, 936 took part (85.25%).

According to the Chechen electoral commission's data, Alu Alkhanov won by a clear margin. He took 73.67% of the votes. Mosvar Khamid was in second place with 8.95% and Vakha Vosayev was third with 4.76%. They were followed by Abdul Bugayev (4.51%), Umar Abuyev (2.97%), Muhumd-Hasan Asakov (2.69%) and Magamed Aidamirov (0.67%), while 5,015 people (0.99%) voted against all the candidates.

Mr Arsakhanov said that the new president should be inaugurated within a month.
