The concert sponsored by the State Museum for St. Petersburg History, Petersburg Carillon Foundation, and Ursa Major Regional Civic Charity Association will be delivered by director of the Belgian Royal Carillon School Jo Haasen, a well-known musician and composer.
The Peter-and-Paul Fortress has been hosting carillon concerts regularly since the only Russia's operational carillon was set at the bell-tower of the Peter-and-Paul's Cathedral in September 2001.
The first Russian carillon of 35 bells, bound for the Peter-and-Paul's Cathedral of St. Petersburg, was bought from Holland by Russian emperor Peter I (1672 - 1725). It perished in the fire of 1756. Another carillon was delivered in 1776 but in 1840 it was declared obsolete and was dismantled.
The new carillon for the Peter-and-Paul's was presented to St. Petersburg by the government of Flanders. It includes 51 bells, the largest about ten kilograms in weight, the smallest about three.
