OFFICERS TRAINED IN U.S. TO HEAD GEORGIAN GENERAL STAFF

TBILISI, August 25 (RIA Novosti) - Officers trained in U.S. will head the General Staff of the Georgian Defense Ministry.

"A new team has come to the General Staff. They were trained in U.S. military academies. Among them is Vakhtang Kapanadze who is to head the General Staff," Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili said at a government session in Batumi on Wednesday.

According to the head of state, Mamuka Nikolaishvili working in NATO for a long time, and David Nairashvili, Georgian representative in NATO headquarters in Brussels, were appointed deputy chiefs of the General Staff.

Mr. Saakashvili believes that the new chiefs should launch a new stage of the Georgian armed forces' development.

On his part, Georgian Defense Minister Georgy Baramidze told journalists that Major General Givi Iukuridze, former chief of the General Staff, has taken all effort in the Tskhinvali region.

"However, Georgia needs progress in all spheres, including reforms of the armed forces," the minister stressed.

General Iukuridze was appointed military attache of the Georgian embassy in Russia.
