TWELVE-YEAR SCHOOL PROGRAM ADOPTED IN KAZAKHSTAN

ASTANA, August 25 (RIA Novosti) - The government of Kazakhstan has adopted a state education program until 2010 envisaging the introduction of a 12-year school education.

Kazakh Education Minister Zhaksybek Kulekeyev said at a Cabinet session on Wednesday that the education concept provided for four grades - pre-school, primary, basic and profile education."

According to him, after each grade the kids will have to take exams. "School education in the higher forms will be set along three profiles: scientific, humanitarian and technical," the minister elaborated.

Secondary special and higher education will also be reformed. The program envisages a three-degree Bachelor/Master/Doctor system of university education .

Earlier, the minister said Kazakhstan had no good higher schools. Currently, there is one computer per 58 students in Kazakhstan, 48% of schools need complete overhaul, the country lacks over 3,700 teachers, 28% of teachers have no completed higher education. The number of teachers without higher education has increased by 2 percent over the past four years.
