TBILISI, August 17 (RIA Novosti) - The Georgian leadership is ready to determine the status of the Tskhinvali region (Georgia's name of the breakaway republic of South Ossetia), said Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania.

"It will be hard to achieve permanent, firm peace without this," he noted.

According to Mr. Zhvania, a territory with an uncertain status and many problems will be a permanent source of tensions and conflicts.

The Prime Minister said at the session of the Joint Control Commission that the Georgian authorities and people in the conflict area need not temporary a ceasefire but the beginning of real discussion of the conflict settlement.

At the commission's session the sides achieved agreements on three issues, ceasefire, demilitarization of the conflict area and opening of a highway via Tskhinvali, Zurab Zhvania reported.

"Moreover, we demand an extended OSCE mission," he added.

At the session the Georgian side also focused on the immediate and unconditional release of Georgian prisoners kept in Tskhinvali.

On Wednesday Tskhinvali will host a regular session of the Joint Control Commission to consider Georgia's proposals and to fix the date of Zhvania-Kokoity (South Ossetian leader) meeting.

Meanwhile, Georgian Foreign Minister Salome Zurabishvili is to raise the question at the OSCE on opening of a checkpoint in the Roksky tunnel linking South and North Ossetia.

On Tuesday she flew to Vienna to participate in the Permanent Council of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

On Wednesday the OSCE headquarters in Vienna will host a special session of the council on the extension of the organization's monitoring mission in the Tskhinvali region.

The session will be held on the initiative of Bulgaria, presiding at the OSCE, at the Georgian leadership's request, the OSCE secretariat said.
