MURMANSK, August 15 (RIA Novosti) - The season of white nights is ending at the latitude of Murmansk, an unfreezing port on the Barents Sea, on Sunday.

Beginning from August 16 the night in Murmansk will become dark, the hydrometeorology directorate of the polar region on the Kola Peninsula said.

The first really dark time of the day will last 65 minutes. The duration of the night in the usual sense of this word will increase by 10-15 minutes a day on average.

The hydrometeorological center's officials noted that the dark time will increase till the polar night comes at the latitude of Murmansk (69 degrees North).

The polar night when the sun does not rise over the edge of the horizon will last from December 2 to January 12 and is the most difficult time for the Northerners.

During this period the city's inhabitants can at best see only clouds "painted" by the sun.

At the latitude of Murmansk white nights lasted from April 30 while the polar day when the sun did not sink below the line of the horizon and shone round the clock lasted from May 22 to July 22.
