TBILISI, August 14 (RIA Novosti's Marina Kvaratskhelia) -U.S. representative in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Richard Minikis discussed with Georgia's President Mikhail Saakashvili the situation in the Tskhinvali region and ways toward a peaceful settlement of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict.

"It is very difficult to come out with a ready-made prescription for a way out of this crisis. I can only say that the conflict should be settled through negotiations, not through military action of any kind," the U.S. representative in the OSCE told journalists after his meeting with Mr. Saakashvili.

According to him, the U.S. Administration fully understands the significance of Russia's role in this issue. Richard Minikis also said that it was vitally important that the conflicting parties resume peace talks as soon as possible.

"On my return to Vienna I am going to hold consultations with my colleagues regarding the issue of expanding the mandate of OSCE observers in the Tskhinvali region. However, a unanimMr. ous support of all 54 OSCE Ambassadors is required to pass such a resolution," Minikis said.

On his part, Richard Miles, U.S. Ambassador in Georgia, said that his Embassy keeps the White House fully informed of the developments in the Tskhinvali region.

"I do not want anyone to regard my trip to the region as a provocation. It is for that particular reason that I refrain from taking such a trip. That notwithstanding, we have full information about the situation in the conflict area," Mr. Miles said.
