GELIKON OPERA PERFORMANCE IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THEATRE FESTIVAL IN MERIDA

MADRID, August 14 (RIA Novosti's Juan Cobo) - The performance of the famous Moscow theatre Gelikon Opera has become the highlight of the 50th classical theatre festival in Merida (Spain).

The Gelikon Opera opened the festival with the premiere of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera "The Clemency of Titus". The performance enjoyed a greatest triumph and was shown on the state television the next day. This is an unprecedented event in the history of the Spanish TV.

Before the performance its director Dmitry Bertman, Gelikon Opera founder and artistic director, gave a press conference.

The performance staged especially for famous director and producer Jorge Marquez, festival's artistic director, received the Spanish theatre critics' raves.

According to El Mundo newspaper, after the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theatres, the Gelikon Opera opened new pages of rich and varied musical culture of modern Russia to Spanish people.

The festival is held in the ancient Roman amphitheater, which was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO. It adds special expressive coloring and strength to the opera, which scene is set in the times of Roman Emperor Titus.

This summer Gelikon Opera performed at other theatre festivals in Spain with great triumph. In early August it presented Vincenzo Bellini's opera "Norma" in Perelada and then showed Leos Janacek's opera "The Makropulos Affair" in Santander.
