INDUSTRY AND ENERGY MINISTRY INSISTS ON LIFTING ARREST FROM YUKOS ACCOUNTS

MOSCOW, August 11 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Industry and Energy Ministry's appeal to the cabinet of ministers to temporarily lift the arrest from Yukos bank accounts concerns oil production, not the company itself.

Spokesman for the Industry and Energy Ministry Yevgeny Vernikov said this to the Ekho Moskvy radio on Tuesday.

"Neither the ministry nor the federal agency interfere with the government's actions. Nobody disputes the decision of the Prosecutor's Office," he said.

On Tuesday Sergei Oganesyan, chief of the Federal Energy Agency, told RIA Novosti that the Industry and Energy Ministry had asked the government to lift the arrest from Yukos' accounts temporarily so that the company could continue operating as usual.

"A company cannot operate without funding operational measures. It cannot pay for customs duties, for oil shipment, the equipment for drill holes, and it therefore has to close the drill holes," said Mr. Oganesyan.
