TBILISI, August 9 (RIA Novosti) - Vladimir Chkhikvishvili, the Russian ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to Georgia, hopes for peaceful settlement of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict.

Mr. Chkhikvishvili told journalists on Monday in Tbilisi after a meeting with Georgian Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania that the problem is that additional checkpoints and formations were brought into the zone of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict.

"We spoke about the state of Russian-Georgian relations, and, naturally, we touched upon the issue of South Ossetia [self-proclaimed republic on Georgian territory]. I once again emphasized that the root of all problems is deployment to the zone of conflict of illegal formations from the Georgian side and deployment of additional checkpoints there," said the ambassador.

Chkhikvishvili said that the meeting touched upon Georgian Defense Minister Georgy Baramidze's visit to Moscow that started on August 9.

"As far as I can understand, these issues will be discussed during Defense Minister Baramidze's and State Minister for Conflict Settlement Khaindrava's visit to Moscow and are being discussed now," said the Russian ambassador.

"I hope we will find a solution that will calm the situation and remove the tension, this very dangerous tension that exists now," said the Russian diplomat.
