ALL-RUSSIAN CHIMING FESTIVAL IN KIZHI

PETROZAVODSK, August 7, 2004 (RIA Novosti) - The 2nd All-Russian Chiming Festival is to be held on August 7-9 on the island of Kizhi in Karelia (an autonomous republic bordering on Finland), the location of the world-renowned wood architecture museum.

The best chimers from the Kizhi museum, Moscow, St Petersburg, Novgorod, Suzdal, Vologda and other Russian cities are taking part in the festival, the museum press service reported. The festival programme includes church chiming, interpretations of traditional Russian chiming, authors' compositions for bells.

A round table with chimers, bell producers and collectors, members of the Russian Campanology Association participating, will take part within the festival framework. They will be discussing establishment of a Chimers' School in Kizhi along with production and contemporary use of bells.

Folklore groups' concerts and a regatta on traditional Kizhi boats will take place.

The festival is part of the traditional Kizhy Area Days. The organizers say its mission is to keep the tradition of Northern Russian chiming.

According to specialists, the specifics of the Northern Russian chiming school is the use of local folklore, a special system of bell hanging and improvisation. These traditions are continued by the Kizhi museum chimers.

The festival has been organized by the Kizhi museum and the Russian Campanology Association.
