DUSHANBE, AUGUST 7 (RIA Novosti) - Lieutenant-General Gaffor Mirzoev, director of the Tajik Drug Control Agency, faces from 15 to 25 years in prison.

The news comes from a source in the board of lawyers of Tajikistan. By virtue of its geographic position, Tajikistan is the first to face attacks of Afghan drug traffic.

Mirzoev was arrested on Friday morning in Dushanbe by officers from the Prosecutor General's Office of Tajikistan.

According to Prosecutor General Bobokhon Bobokhonov, Mirzoev is suspected of slaughtering a government official, illegal keeping of a large batch of arms, illegal business, seizure of land and other crimes.

Under the article "assassination with aggravating circumstances" of the Tajik Criminal Code, he may face a 15- to 25-year deprivation of freedom.

General Gaffor Mirzoev held the post of the director of the Tajik Drug Control Agency for only six months.

Former warlord of the Popular Front, opposing the governmental forces during the 1992-1997 Civil War in Tajikistan and after it becoming the chairman of the National Olympic Committee of Tajikistan, late last January Mirzoev was removed from the post of the commander of the presidential guard by the decree of President Emomali Rakhmonov.

Mirzoev was sharply against the decree. The conflict was settled by his appointment as the chief fighter against the narcomafia.

Experts believe that today's arrest of the general is in continuation of the January confrontation between Rakhmonov and Mirzoev, representing the rivalling regional elites and clans.

On Friday morning the operative group blocked the approaches to the general's place of work. He and his seven guards were detained. According to Bobokhonov, the general showed no resistance.

Mirzoev will be finally charged in ten days.
