REGULATIONS FOR FEDERAL SERVICE FOR ECOLOGICAL, TECHNOLOGICAL AND NUCLEAR INSPECTION APPROVED

MOSCOW, AUGUST 5 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian government has confirmed the regulations for the Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Nuclear Inspection, the governmental press service said.

Under the resolution, endorsed by Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov, the service is to adopt normative acts on environmental monitoring and supervision in the use of nuclear energy.

The federal service is to submit for government consideration draft federal laws, normative acts within its competence.

In addition, it bears responsibility for the issue of work permits in the field of use of energy from nuclear power plants and regulates the makeup and contents of documents ensuring the safety of nuclear units.

The federal service is also to approve the procedure for examining accidents, incidents and the loss of industrial explosives, the regulations say.

The service monitors the physical protection of nuclear units, sources of radiation and nuclear storage sites, as well as Russia's fulfilment of its international obligations in the ensurance of safety in the use of energy from nuclear power plants.

The service is to license the keeping of nuclear materials and operation of nuclear power plants, supervise timely return of wasted nuclear fuel and its processing products to the supplier state with which Russia has concluded the international agreement on the bringing of nuclear fuel to the Russian Federation.
