NEW EQUIPMENT FOR SEISMOLOGISTS

MOSCOW, August 3 (RIA Novosti) - Scientists of the Moscow Physics and Technology Institute developed unique, unsophisticated and extremely sensitive sensors. Their quality and rather low price in mass production will provide for establishing a world seismic network, including the seismic sensors planted on the bottom of the World Ocean.

The sensors, which were used earlier, are electromechanical, the best of them being notable for high price. The new devices developed in Russia are designed under the molecular electronics' principles. According to project manager professor Vladimir Kozlov, the seismic sensor is an electrolyte-containing tube, both tips covered with elastic membranes. The tube incorporates two electrodes similar to 3D mesh of finest wire. As soon as the device is exposed to external acceleration, the fluid moves as far as the membrane allows. The cells of the 3D mesh get additional charge and the circuit's current alters. This is the required signal. The most important thing here is the fact that it is expressly associated with the external acceleration. First six sensors already exist in the form of solid pellets similar to small round watch batteries.

Since the new devices' low price and technological effectiveness provide for their mass production, seismologists have approached their most ambitious plans coming true: to cover the whole planet with a world seismic network incorporating multitude of seismic sensors.
