MOSCOW, July 29 (RIA Novosti) - New Russian ambassador to the UN Andrei Denisov has taken office and will preside over the UN Security Council in August already, said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Yuri Fedotov.

According to him, the UN is the key mechanism regulating international relations, especially, in the globalization epoch when "new threats and challenges are growing and affect each country and, probably, every man".

Therefore, we need a coordinated international response to these threats and challenges, the deputy minister stressed.

"The UN is the most efficient and universal mechanism to work out a relevant strategy," Yuri Fedotov emphasized.

The main threats are international terrorism, regional conflicts and crime growth, he added.

In his words, so-called 'soft' threats should not be ignored.

"Extremism, national and religious intolerance emerge from poverty, instability in whole regions and serious ecological problems. Terrorists use these problems to recruit their accomplices," he concluded.

On August 1 Russia will replace Romania on the post of the UN Security Council's chair.
